Meet The Artists

Through the voice of the Artist

Animikiikaa (Thunderbirds) are sacred beings to the Anishinabeg (Anishinaabe People). Thunderbird knowledge has been embedded in paintings, quillwork, beadwork, carvings, pictographs, and oral histories since time immemorial. It is understood that Animikiikaa are powerful sky spirits that protect the Anishinaabeg against underworld beings (Mishipeshu – Water Lynx). They are also attributed with creating thunderstorms with their wings and lightning with their eyes.
